Social Media Demystified – Lynne Wester Does It Again!

July 22nd, 2011

Lynne Wester, the donor relations dynamo behind donorrelationsguru.com, was a hit again at this year′s Southeast Donor Relations Conference in Raleigh. For those of you who don’t (yet) know her, Lynne is a force to be reckoned with and a personality not to be forgotten.  She is a leader among the Association of Donor Relations Professionals’ network of dynamic, forward-thinking “stars”, and a frequent speaker.  This is not the first time I have seen her presentation on social media, yet as always, she was on top of the newest of the new and casual and confident in her mastery of the technology.

Here are just a few of the new tools she turned us onto today:

Twitter – yeah, we all know it is out there, but none of us seem to be using it to the level that she challenged us to achieve.  Lynne explained that it is the center of the hub for disseminating cross-platform social media.  Most importantly, she recommends HootSuite for outgoing tweet scheduling (making the process manageable for those of us who can’t attend to our social media minute-by-minute).

FourSquare – Lynne introduced this location-based mobile app that is most often used for rewarding a customer base with freebies, discounts or competitive point systems for registering their arrival at a specific destination.  She quickly translated this into an idea for a campus tour where prospective students, parents or alumni get “points” and earn “perks” for visiting key destinations.

QR-Code Generator – for those of you not yet taking advantage of these funny-looking black-and-white squares of gibberish, Lynne showed just how easy they are to create (immediate and free) to lead your audiences directly from their smart phones to your website, online form or phone number.  Give this one a try…  I just set it up while writing this post!

Next on the horizon is Google+, a new social media “venue” now in beta testing.  I was recently invited to try it out with a friend.  I haven’t gone far yet, but you can bet I’ll be out there tonight looking for Lynne!  Who better to guide me through the “newest” of the new media?

If you’re making headway with social media, especially if you’re having success getting donors to respond to you online, we’d like to hear about it.  If you’re watching another guru like, Lynne, share that with us, too!
